Manuel Alejandro invented MABIS to bring early breast cancer detection to women beyond the reach of mammography. At the APEC Tech for Good Workshop in Shenzhen, Even G2 helped him take that mission to an international stage.
A Peruvian Healthtech Vision Takes the Global Stage
When photographers gathered around Manuel Alejandro onstage in Shenzhen, they saw a composed speaker wearing what looked like an ordinary pair of glasses. What they could not see was the keynote script appearing directly in front of him.
Manuel traveled more than 16,000 kilometers from Arequipa, Peru, to speak at the APEC Tech for Good Workshop. He was there to share an idea that had started as a university research project and grew into a much larger ambition: to help ensure that access to early breast cancer detection is not determined by where a woman lives.
An Electronic and Telecommunications Engineer, Manuel is the Founder and CEO of ZAMENIS Biotech Innovation, a technology spin-off from Universidad Católica San Pablo. There, he invented MABIS, a portable near-field radar system that combines microwave imaging and AI for the early, non-invasive detection of breast cancer.
For Manuel, Shenzhen marked a new chapter. The work he had begun in southern Peru was stepping onto an international stage, before an audience that could understand its potential, challenge it, and perhaps help carry it further.
Even G2 had become part of how he prepared for that new chapter. As his work began taking him into more international and multilingual settings, the glasses helped him keep essential information in view without losing connection with the people around him.
Building Early Detection That Transcends Borders
MABIS began with a gap Manuel could not ignore. Mammography relies on specialized equipment that may be difficult to access outside major healthcare centers. Manuel began asking a different question: what if early detection technology could travel to women instead?
The answer become MABIS, a portable system that combines near-field radar, microwave imaging, and AI to support early, non-invasive breast cancer detection in communities conventional imaging may not easily reach.
The idea was developed in Peru, but Manuel never saw its relevance as limited to one country. Similar barriers exist across many parts of the world, particularly in regions where healthcare infrastructure remains uneven.
At APEC, Manuel was not only presenting an invention. He was demonstrating how innovation from Peru and the Global South could contribute to the future of healthcare.
Finding His Confidence with Even G2
Taking MABIS onto an international stage was a major milestone for Manuel—but it also came with pressure.
It was his first time in China, and he was preparing to explain a complex medical innovation to researchers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers from across the Asia-Pacific region. Although Manuel speaks English, it is not his first language. Delivering a technical keynote in English, far from home and before an audience of global experts, added another layer of pressure.
He was excited, but also nervous.
Before using Even G2, Manuel would memorize his script or rely on printed notes. Trying to remember every line added to the pressure, while repeatedly looking down made it harder to connect naturally with the audience.
“When you keep looking down at your script, you lose that connection,” he said.
For his keynote in Shenzhen, Manuel placed his script in Teleprompter on Even G2 and used Even R1 to move through each section discreetly. His words remained directly in view without requiring him to hold a phone, reach for a presentation remote, or remember every sentence under pressure.
Instead of worrying about what to say next—or searching for the right words in English—he could maintain eye contact and focus on the idea he had traveled so far to share.
“With Even G2, I felt calm, prepared, and fully in control on stage,” he said.
To the audience, Manuel was simply an inventor speaking passionately about his work. Even G2 made technology fade into the background, so his message could take center stage.
Fully Engaged Across Languages
Manuel’s keynote was only the beginning. The APEC workshop brought together people from different countries, disciplines, and languages, making the exchange of ideas around the event just as valuable as the presentation itself.
During several sessions delivered in Chinese, many international attendees relied on interpretation headphones. Manuel simply switched on Live Translation to read subtitles directly in Even G2 while continuing to watch the speaker.
“Some speakers presented entirely in Chinese, and most attendees needed interpretation,” he said. “I simply switched the language on the glasses and was able to follow everything easily.”
With translations directly in view, Manuel could stay focused on the speaker and fully engaged in the workshop. For a founder taking a medical innovation beyond Peru, that meant learning from international experts, discovering new perspectives, and exploring how MABIS might one day reach the communities that need it most.
Helping a Vision Travel Further
From Arequipa to Shenzhen, Manuel’s journey was about more than distance. He brought a dream born in Peru to the world stage. MABIS grew from his belief that geography should never stand between a woman and early detection. Even G2 helped him move beyond language barriers and the pressure of an unfamiliar stage, so that his conviction could be heard, understood, and carried further.
When the photographers leaned in, they saw only Manuel, not the script or the quiet support behind him. Technology faded into the background, and that's the point. The future he had traveled so far to speak for came clearly into view.
